Monoethanolamine has a combination of properties from both amines and alcohols, hence it exudes the special capability of undergoing reactions common to both groups. Monoethanolamine is mildly alkaline, and is able to react with acids to form salts or soaps (as an amine). It is also hygroscopic and can be esterified (as an alcohol).
